Some saved links regarding alternatives to carousels. The takeaway is: don’t use carousels, A/B test the solution, continuously test user impact, analytics and conversion rates.
We also found, in one of our academic insights, that images of humans (especially in terms of apparel) draw more attention (fixation time, etc). So consider showing customers the context of your product on real humans in contextual environments.

The human eye reacts to movement (and will miss the important stuff). Too many messages equals no message.

Why Use a Hero Image?
Consumers feel pleased when they see a website that makes sense, one that is immediately: easy to read, clear, understandable

Highlight your top products. If analytics data shows one product is popular, show that in the hero. Rather than cycle through all products in a slider, instead a single, static page is proven to be much more effective.
Offer easy access to top content. If your customers really dive into your site, link to it from your homepage so your customers can access it immediately. Shopify’s static ‘hero’ header image invites visitors to convert right away, but it also gives them static alternatives. It’s a highly effective method to use when you have to include multiple items.
Combine top content and top products. Experiment with combinations of top content and top products to see which performs better. Test, change it up, and test again.
Focus on your current promotion. This is really effective when customers are looking for particular products during the holidays or for seasonal items.
For almost all websites—rotating carousels aren’t the best use of space. Your brand is better off using slider content in an expanded, static format or removing its secondary content entirely.
